The Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management have carried out an interesting study into the impact of food waste disposers on the waste water system, the diversion of food waste from landfill and consequent reduction in methane production, avoidance of extra vehicle movements for separate collection, avoidance of vermin attraction and avoidance of storing putrescible food waste in or close to kitchens with it's associated health and odour implications.
Briefly, this study shows that although it was assumed that food waste disposers would impact negatively on the sewage system and should be prohibited, consequent studies proved that the opposite was in fact true, and bans that had been in place, in New York City for example, were lifted.
